Shh...There's An Elephant In The Room And Nobody Wants To Talk About It

There's an elephant in the room and it's going to rampage one day soon whether we talk about it nor not.  That elephant is the consumer debt crisis.

It's hard to wrap your head around there being a consumer debt crisis when the economy seems to be doing so well...that is until you realize the economy is doing so well ( in part) because consumers keep borrowing money.  We're not pouring cash into the economy, we' racking up loans instead and the creditors are thrilled with us...for now.  But it won't be long before the elephant rampages and when it starts it will knock things off-kilter in every direction.  This elephant doesn't discriminate and it will stop at nothing but cold, hard cash.

Mortgages, auto loans, credit cards, and student loans have ballooned total consumer debt to $14 trillion, and this number is only trending upward. The easy credit economy (manufactured by lending institutions) has all but obliterated American savings and replaced them with debt.  Why worry about savings when you can pull out a charge card instead?  Reportedly, the average American consumer has less than $1,000 in the bank while praying the car doesn't break down and no medical emergencies arise.

Don't you wonder what compels us to keep digging a deeper hole of debt when we could refrain from spending or adopt a "cash only" policy at home?  The simple answer is we're spoiled - AND we've been spellbound by low-interest rates and irresistible (short term) 0% credit cards.  We'd rather have what we want RIGHT NOW than wait for a day when we can afford to have it...the way it was in the olden days.

It's time to stop ignoring the elephant in the room and it's time to get serious about paying off your debt...including your mortgage.
